‘Put Your Paddle Where Your Mouth Is’ – Thanks to SteriPEN™ for the sponsorship and support for River Gambia Expedition 2012

SteriPEN™ - blog - River Gambia Expedition 2012

Thanks to Dee Knisely, PR Director, at SteriPEN for her new blog post about our journey on the ‘River Gambia Expedition 2012 – 1000km source to sea African odyssey’. We’re not sure about the ‘heroic’ bit…’crazy’ might be more fitting!

And, of course, we are extra thankful for the production sponsorship on the SteriPEN’s: the Sidewinder and the Adventurer Opti UV Water Purifiers. These amazing little gadgets will be invaluable on our expedition, when we have no other water source to drink from, other than the River Gambia or open wells, when we are on the river in Guinea, Senegal and The Gambia, in West Africa.

‘The SteriPEN™ Sidewinder Hand-Powered, Battery-Free UV Water Purifier – ‘Fill it, Crank it, Drink it! Perfect for Campers or Emergency use. SteriPEN® Sidewinder, the first portable UV water purifier to require no batteries, purifies 1 liter of water in 90 seconds. The SteriPEN Sidewinder features our proven UV system that destroys waterborne bacteria, viruses and protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium’

‘The SteriPEN Adventurer Opti uses a revolutionary optical eye to sense the water. The patent-pending technology ensures safe use and provides purification in even the coldest of waters. The new optical sensor doubles as a convenient LED flashlight’

We’ve had a fantastic response so far, on the product sponsorship front…above and beyond what we hoped for. However, we still have a bunch of products that we need help and/or sponsorship, with getting before we leave – before we put the paddles in the water in early October – such as 2 x canoes (these are our biggest expense! Fold-up ones are the ideal choice, as we will be trekking, thus portaging all our gear, some of the way, where the River Gambia is impassable), tents, sleeping bags, mosquito nets, boots & quick-dry clothing (for our two Gambian team members) and so on…

If you think that you can help us with any of the above, we’d be ever so grateful. Please check out our fund raising page – ‘An Exchange’ - for the full list and more information. We are also happy to send you a full pdf of how we will publicize everyone who sponsors or donates to the expedition.

Thanks again, SteriPEN™, and to all our other product sponsors.

Huge gratitude and respect

We still have a ways to go with our fundraising, which includes funding for fee’s, food and insurance for two local River Gambia boatmen, plus guides and fixers in each of the other two countries – for the duration of 2-3 months. Also, we have a Wish List of products that we still need for the expedition. If we can persuade a few more companies to kindly donate some of the essential items from our Wish List, then this will bring our target amount down quite considerably – which means we won’t have to raise our target amount, hopefully, leaving us more to donate to our chosen charity (more news on that, to follow shortly).

Route Map River Gambia

Our Route – The River Gambia, West Africa: 1 River. 2 Borders. 3 Countries

Each and every donation – whether it be funding or product – that we have received so far is helping us to put our paddles into the water, to not only attempt to make the first recorded source to sea expedition of the entire length of the River Gambia – one of the last remaining, large, free-flowing rivers in Africa – but, there has been talk for a number of years of damming the river. So before this happens, we want to collect visual/written/audio stories – through multiple medias – documenting the lives and cultures of the indigenous people, who live and work along the course of the River Gambia. For more information, please click this link ‘What and Why Exactly Are We Doing This Expedition…you may well ask?

Thanks again, SteriPEN™ for your support!

SteriPEN UV Water Purifiers have just donated to our River Gambia Expedition 2012

SteriPEN™ UV Water Purifiers

SteriPEN™ UV Water Purifiers

We got product donations from SteriPEN!!

Thanks to everyone over at SteriPEN™ for their very generous donation of two portable UV water purifiers for our River Gambia Expedition – SteriPEN Sidewinder™ (battery-free) and the SteriPEN Adventure Opti http://www.steripen.com/adventurer-opti and http://www.steripen.com/sidewinder

We used a SteriPEN™ on our 2009 expedition, when we walked 930km around The Gambia, West Africa. They are light and portable and extremely invaluable when often the only water on offer is from open, uncovered wells – where all manner of creatures are known to fall in and rot…thus contaminating the water. The SteriPEN™ ultraviolet light zaps and purifies water in about a minute – eliminating over 99.9% of viruses and bacteria that cause waterborne illnesses. On this next journey, when the only water that might be available to us will be from the River Gambia itself, we are stoked to have the handy little gadgets in our backpacks.

Thank you SteriPEN™!

The Florios
