Bunja also happens to come from a lineage of griots (the traditional oral storytellers, poets, and musicians of West Africa). We’ll be posting more about him very soon.

Salaam alikum to all our friends who begin fasting for Ramadan today…a little West African celebratory music: one of Youssou N’Dour’s inspirations, the Guelewar Band of Banjul

Guelewar Band of Banjul: Wollou (Photostories by Jason Florio & Helen Jones ) video – NME

When we returned from A Short Walk in the Gambian Bush – a 930km African odyssey, we were sent the attached video of music and photos from our walk, that a well-wisher had put together for us – which NME then picked up on (I always wanted to be in the NME!!). She did a great job…the music is fantastic…listen to all the influences in there – Youssou N’Dour rather quite likes them too: ‘Guelewar Band of Banjul has been further developing the afro-manding sound of Ifang Bondi during a short period in the late 1970s and early 1980s…Youssou N’Dour considers Guelewar as a main inspirational influence, partly because of the use of lyrics in a noble wolof as opposed to “street” wolof...’

Florio photographs the chief at Khalaji village, The Gambia, West Africa – with our usual audience of 30+ kids + the rest of the village!

Peace and spiritual reflection on this, the first day of Ramadam – Friday 20th July 2012.
